What is an SR-22?

An SR-22 filing is proof of coverage that we (your insurer) sends to the Florida DMV to show you have the state-required liability insurance. Requirements vary, but you’ll typically be required to have an SR-22 filing for three years. The cost of an SR-22 filing is low, but insurance rates are significantly more expensive overall, due to the reason you were determined to be a high-risk driver by the state. Common reasons for needing an SR-22 include:

  • DUI or DWI offenses
  • Other major moving violations like reckless driving
  • Several traffic infractions in a short period of time
  • Being found at fault in an accident while driving uninsured
  • Driving with a suspended or revoked license

SR-22 insurance isn’t a separate type of auto insurance, but it is an auto insurance policy that has an SR-22 endorsement attached. An SR-22 form can also be attached to a motorcycle insurance policy. In order to reinstate your license, you need to purchase a policy that meets Florida’s required liability insurance limits, and then we can submit an SR-22 form on your behalf. This form acts as proof of coverage, letting the state know you have an insurance policy with at least (this is Florida’s minimum SR-22 requirement):

  • $10,000 of bodily injury coverage per person in an accident
  • $20,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident
  • $10,000 of property damage coverage per accident

Why do I need an SR-22?

The State of Florida now considers you a high-risk driver and they want to make sure you are keeping continuous insurance coverage. You might be required to carry the SR22 filing if you were caught driving without insurance. In some cases, SR22 insurance is also required if you have too many violations on your driving record.

How much does SR22 insurance cost in Florida?

Premiums are derived from many risk factors including age, sex, location, driving record, financial responsibility, etc. Insurance premiums can differ from person to person.

Can I make payments on my Florida SR22 insurance?

In most cases, you can make monthly payments on your SR22 insurance. It typically depends on your filing number and your particular situation.

How long is an SR-22 required?

How long you need to have an SR-22 filing in place can vary, so we recommend confirming with the DMV. But in most cases, you’ll need to have the SR-22 in place for at least three years in Florida before you can purchase a policy without one. If during that period, your policy lapses or is canceled and you are uninsured, your license will likely be suspended again and you’ll have to pay a second fee to have it reinstated, in addition to the cost of insurance.

What types of SR 22 certificates are there?

There are three types of SR22 insurance:

  • Operator: An Operator’s Certificate is designed for drivers who borrow or rent a car, but don’t own a car. This is sometimes used with a non-owner car insurance policy.
  • Owner: An Owner’s Form is for those who own and drive their own car.
  • Operator/Owner: An Operator/Owner Form is a combination form that applies to those who own their own car, but also borrows or rents one to drive occasionally.

What’s a Certificate of Financial Responsibility (CFR)?

A certificate of financial responsibility is another term for SR22 insurance, showing that you’re meeting your state’s minimum car insurance requirements for a specified amount of time.

What if my policy cancels?

The SR-22 requires that drivers maintain the Florida mandated amount of liability insurance for the complete term. Because you’re required to pay in full ahead of the policy term, you typically won’t be able to cancel your coverage mid-term (you’ve already paid for it, after all).

But if your policy is canceled for any reason, we will need to alert the state of Florida within a couple of weeks. Once the state learns that your insurance has been canceled, your driving privileges could be suspended or revoked.

SR22 vs. FR44: What’s the difference?

The FR-44 is another proof of financial responsibility form, similar to the SR-22, that’s used only in Florida and Virginia. Unlike the SR-22, which only requires that drivers meet the minimum amount of car insurance required by their state, the FR-44 requires that your liability coverage limits are significantly higher than state minimums.

Individuals convicted of the following violations may be required to carry an FR-44:

  • DUI (with or without injury)
  • Driving on a suspended license

The state lets drivers know which form is required and for how long.
